Hull’s Liberal Democrat group leader, Cllr Mike Ross has written to Labour’s Housing portfolio holder, calling for more action to address serious concerns in the standards of ‘supported accommodation’ in the city. This follows the news that over half of the homes for vulnerable Hull residents 'seriously' fail to meet living standards.
In the letter, Cllr Ross said that the fact so many homes had failed the Council’s checks of privately rented homes for vulnerable people was "unacceptable." He went further to add “Poor quality accommodation standards are something no person should have to endure, let alone some of the most vulnerable residents in Hull."
It has been revealed that Hull City Council’s Supported Housing Review Team has found that 60% of the homes fail the ‘decent homes standard' in their first test which has been called a "housing scandal" the Councils opposition Liberal Democrat Group.
Across Hull, it was revealed from the Councils first 60 houses inspected at random 60% failed the test pointing to a potential crisis in the quality and the management of the supported housing that homes hundreds of vulnerable people across the city.
Hull Liberal Democrats stand in solidarity with black communities here in the UK, USA and around the world. At this time, when our values are being challenged, as liberals we stand on the side of racial and social justice.
Responding to a report by Generation Rent, which has found that 'homelessness is set to treble this year ... as a result of the economic shock of coronavirus', Hull Liberal Democrat Group Leader, Councillor Mike Ross stated:
"The fact that homelessness is set to treble this year is yet more proof that the consequences of the pandemic are set to be devastating for those already struggling to get by and can afford the least to be hit. The Government must take action now to stop these statistics becoming a reality here in Hull.
The Liberal Democrats have called on the Government to commit to a Summer Learning Fund that would support 11,197 disadvantaged children across Hull to get ready for returning to school. Back the campaign here.
The Liberal Democrats have set out a package of measures that we feel would support children and help open schools safely. We're urging the Government to create a Summer Learning Fund, which would give every child on free school meals free places at summer learning camps in their community.
