Research from the local Hull Liberal Democrat Group has found that 7670 EU nationals in Hull have not been granted permanent Settled Status to remain in the UK.

Local Councillor for Pickering Mark Ieronimo has said that residents in Hull and across the country should be given the automatic right to stay in the city.

Hull is home to thousands of EU nationals of which over 16,700 have applied for Settled Status with almost half stuck in bureaucratic limbo. The call comes on the 4-year anniversary of the vote to leave the EU that has since left thousands of UK/EU citizens unsure about their future.

Commenting on the figures Cllr Mark Ieronimo said:

"In January I asked the Council to put pressure on the Government to reassure EU nationals that they are welcome in both Hull and across the country. These figures show there are still thousands in limbo in Hull and they need reassuring.

"The Government must now show its support to our EU friends and neighbours, many of which have worked so hard during the Covid-19 pandemic and give them their right to live and work in the UK."
