Liberal Democrats in St Andrews

Image of St Andrews

As one of the wards that hugs the River Humber, St Andrews contains the former St Andrews Dock after which it is named. This area was traditionally home to the Hessle Road fishing community, and still retains this link with its past over three decades after Hull's fishing industry collapsed. St Andrews lies between the Hull to Leeds railway and the River Humber, running from Rawlings Way in the east to the boundary with Pickering ward in the west. Much of St Andrews is Victorian housing, but there are a number of newer developments. As St Andrews is one of the most deprived areas in the city, it falls within a Pathfinder Housing Market Renewal area, which is to provide regeneration over the next decade.

News in and around St Andrews

26 Apr 2010 - New Lighting for Hessle Road

Hessle Road will benefit from new attractive street lights under Gateway plans for the council to regenerate the area. Prospective MP Mike Ross said: “The lighting will be in keeping with the heritage of the area, and will make Hessle Road a brighter, safer and more friendly place to be.”

09 Apr 2010 - Fighting for the future of the Community Action Box

Local Liberal Democrat Campaigner Tracey Henry has been fighting for the Community Action Box after staff changes have threatened its future. The CAB has been used by hundreds of residents from across the area as a quick and confidential way to report antisocial behaviour, fly-tipping and other problems that residents experience around our neighbourhood.

When St Andrews’ Labour councillors failed to turn up to yet another meeting Tracey was left to fight St Andrews’ residents corner again. “The CAB is an essential measure to bring public confidence to our run down areas. Having staff tucked away in an office somewhere is no substitute.” Tracey will continue to fight for the CAB.

03 Apr 2010 - Funding approved for Youth Facility

Recently Hull's Liberal Democrat council approved funding for a youth facility on Massey Street. The money has been allocated to Hessle Road Network, an organisation that provides support for young people in the St Andrews area. Campaigner Tracey Henry welcomed the news, saying: "Though the Labour councillors for this area have refused funding for some community organisations, the Lib Dems have been keen to support those like Hessle Road Network who do a lot of good work in the community."

14 Feb 2010 - Continued Concerns over Hessle Post Office

Despite positive noises from the local Labour MP about a recent meeting with Post Office Ltd. about the future of Hessle' post office, Liberal Democrat councillors in Hessle will not be taking the pressure off the company to ensure the post office stays open. Commenting to the local media, Hessle councillor Brian Jefferies said: "It was a positive meeting in the sense Post Office Ltd has new premises in mind but I am concerned that, if it falls through, there isn't a second option."

Residents' experience of post office closures in nearby West Hull, and the North Hull Labour MP apparently campaigning against closures while voting for them in Parliament, are a warning to those in Hessle of what could happen. Cllr Jefferies added, "I do feel the Post Office Ltd is doing all it can, but I will feel much better once an announcement is made."
