Liberal Democrats in Orchard Park and Greenwood

Image of Orchard Park and Greenwood

Occupying the far north-west of the city, Orchard Park & Greenwood is named both after a housing estate and a principal route through the ward. The ward stretches from the city boundary in the north and west to Beverley Road in the east and Endike Lane in the south. The vast majority of the housing is social housing, on the 1960s Orchard Park Estate and on part of the pre-war North Hull Estate.

News in and around Orchard Park and Greenwood

20 Mar 2010 - Lack of Consultation? Another Red Herring from Labour MP

In recent months Labour's Hull North MP has criticised the Lib Dem council for "lack of proper consultation" on schemes to redevelop the Orchard Park Estate, and has caused unnecessary concern from local residents, putting £160 million of funding for the city at risk. But her criticisms have proved to be mere scaremongering as the first part of a lengthy consultation comes to a close.

With a series of meetings going on in February and March, Lib Dem cabinet member Cllr Rick Welton explained: "The consultation aims to ensure that everyone living on Orchard Park has the chance to have their say on two options for change, both of which aim to make the entire area a more desirable place to live." Feedback from the current round of consultation will be used to draw up detailed plans, before a second round of consultation in June.

20 Nov 2009 - Labour councillor dubs recession a 'picnic'

Lib Dem councillors were astounded to hear a Hull Labour councillor brand the current recession a 'picnic'. Councillor Terry Geraghty, once leader of the now defunct Humberside County Council, made the comment in a speech at a council meeting yesterday at Hull's Guildhall, in which Lib Dems spoke out against Labour government plans to sell off council tax payers' assets to offset its own financial incompetence.

"I'm gobsmacked to hear him call the recession a 'picnic'," commented Lib Dem council leader Carl Minns. "After the amount of work from the Lib Dem council that has gone into helping businesses weather the financial downturn and trying to keep the local caravan industry alive, to call the recession a 'picnic' shows no grip on reality." Cllr Geraghty hopes to keep his seat in the Orchard Park & Greenwood ward in next year's local elections.

16 Sep 2009 - Orchard Park is on the Up

Orchard Park has been badly neglected for many years. Now things are starting to change. The Lib Dems on Hull City Council recently approved funding for work to start on the shopping centre in Orchard Park after decades of neglect. The Council has backed the new Health Centre and Local Services Centre being built between Hall Road and Orchard Park Road.

The Lib Dems have also backed plans for a new sheltered accommodation facility in Orchard Park - providing first class sheltered homes for local elderly people. And whilst the details of the site have yet to be finalised, a new Academy for northern Hull is on the cards. Denis Healy said: “Labour built this estate in the 1960s and left it without many vital services - like a decent shopping centre. “Only now are things starting to turn around - after decades of Labour neglect.”

Labour neglected this area for decades. Now things are starting to change for the better.

10 Sep 2009 - 'You Decide' say Lib Dems

Now that funding has been secured for regeneration work in Orchard Park, local Lib Dems have called for proper consultation with local residents. Work is planned to start on the new homes in 2013, with the first homes being ready in 2016. “It is vital that local people are involved at all times,” said Cllr Chris Randall. “Your views will shape how this money is spent in our area.”

16 Aug 2009 - Warning! More Labour Lies...

The Lib Dems on Hull City Council have won £156million to invest in Orchard Park. But that won’t stop others trying to scare people about the regeneration in their desperate scramble for votes. The Labour MP has already attacked the Council for “failing to consult” - when Labour councillors agreed that public consultation should only take place if the bid for funding was successful! Don’t listen to rumours about this issue - call Chris on 802074 to get the facts.
