News in and around Northfield

27 Apr 2010 - Cleanup on A63 Begins After Lib Dems Press for Action

After local Lib Dem councillors raised the state of the A63, plans have been made to litter pick the verges. This work started in mid March, and is expected to take two to three weeks to complete. “Residents complained as to just how messy it had become.” Said Cllr Bob Tress. “We raised these concerns with the Council and there are now plans to have a clean up." “I am pleased that this stretch of road will have a clean up” added Mike Ross. “It should see the stretch on both the Hessle and Hull side being tidied up, helping to improve the appearance of the road.”

19 Apr 2010 - A Small Cross, a Big Opportunity: Don't Lose Your Chance

Nick Clegg recently called on people to vote on 6th May. As the 20th April deadline for voter registration looms, people across the country are being urged to register to vote if they have not done so already. If you are not already registered to vote, you can fill in the online form here: http://bit.ly/m9ylp. As it is so close to the deadline we recommend you hand the form in at The Guildhall (for Hull residents) or County Hall in Beverley (for residents in Hessle). Don't lose your chance to have your say!

11 Apr 2010 - Securing a Future for the Post Office

Local Lib Dem councillors have been heavily involved in helping secure the future of the Post Office. “While nationally Labour are closing down thousands of Post Offices, I am pleased that locally we are doing all we can to protect this vital service” said Cllr Brian Jefferies. “We are delighted to hear that the new Post Office is to remain in the Town Centre, being relocated to a shop premises in Prestongate.”

04 Apr 2010 - Lib Dems Fighting Car Parking Charges Coming to Hessle

The Tory run East Riding Council is proposing that charges be introduced to park in Hessle. Local Lib Dems are alarmed by the proposals and do not support them. Cllr Phil Davison said “The Council say they will not happen for 2 years and only then if the country is out of recession. But be sure - they will come! Any charging will have a serious impact on the viability and vitality of shops and businesses in the centre of Hessle. We listened to the local businesses and believe that their livelihoods would be affected even after the recession ends.”

He continued: “It will cause parking conflict in residential streets and customers will drive to the nearest out-of-town free-parking supermarket. We will continue to oppose these plans.” Local campaigner Mike Ross added, “Local residents and traders have said no to this stealth tax. It will hit shoppers and traders and be bad news for the area. The Conservative led Council must think again about Car Parking Charges in Hessle. Let us know if you back our plan to stop these plans.”
