Liberal Democrats in Myton

Image of Myton

Named after a village that once existed in the area, Myton ward encompasses the whole of what was the town of Hull until the 18th century. It stretches from the River Hull in the east to Rawlings Way in the west, and from Station Drive in the north to the River Humber in the south. Myton ward contains the start of a number of the arterial roads leading out to the north and west of the city. Due to the history of the area the housing is very diverse; while many of the surviving pre-18th century buildings have found other uses, the population can be found living in anything from Georgian and Victorian housing and flats to modern housing estates like Thornton and Bridlington Avenue.

News in and around Myton

25 May 2010 - Family fun for this half term

Families in Hull are in for a treat this Bank Holiday and during half term, as a whole host of exciting activities come to the city during National Family Week 2010 (31 May - 6 June). Hull has been selected as one of National Family Week’s flagship cities and will play host to one of the biggest family picnics in the UK, in West Park, as well as an action-packed sports day in East Park.

Councillor Christine Randall, Liberal Democrat Portfolio Holder for Education and Children’s Services, said: “In this day and age family members don’t spend as much time together as they once did. National Family Week aims to rectify this and provide a range of activities to encourage families to have fun and spend more time together. There are lots of fantastic people and projects working together towards our goal of making Hull a family friendly city where no child is left behind, and this week is a great opportunity to celebrate that. I would urge everyone to spend more quality time with their family during and beyond National Family Week.”

13 May 2010 - Continuity in Ruling Lib Dem Group after Council Elections

At the first part of its Annual General Meeting last Sunday, Hull City Council's ruling Liberal Democrat group re-elected all of its executive unopposed. Councillor Carl Minns continues to be leader of the group, while Councillor Abigail Bell will continue as his deputy. As the group still has a comfortable majority on the council, Carl and Abigail are therefore expected to continue as Leader and Deputy Leader of the city council after its AGM later this month.

11 May 2010 - Hulls new recycling initiative is the best in Britain

Hull City Council's new recycling scheme has beaten nationwide competition to win the best Waste Management Initiative in the Commercial and Public Sector in the Awards for Excellence organised by Letsrecycle.com (http://www.letsrecycle.com). The Letsrecycle.com Awards for Excellence are a national showcase for innovation and success in recycling and waste management. In the public sector award category, the judges were looking for excellence in waste diversion or minimisation as well as a first class recycling service.

Since the Council rolled out its new kerbside collection and recycling scheme, it recorded 48 per cent of household waste being recycled in March. This was double the 24 per cent recorded for February 2009. With figures increasing month by month, the accumulated figures for the year indicate that Hull looks set to reach 50 per cent, thereby breaking through the 45 per cent target set for a March 2011 deadline.

04 May 2010 - Cracking Down on Underage Drinking

Hull's Lib Dem council recently ran an alcohol campaign across the city. Antisocial behaviour hotspots were visited regularly and spot checks were carried out at off-licensed premises. Cabinet member Mike Ross commented, "We've taken a zero-tolerance approach to young people drinking alcohol. This campaign involved the police and the Licensing Department to crack down on this problem."

03 May 2010 - Getting People On Line

The Liberal Democrat council in Hull has obtained funding to help people in deprived areas to get on line. The project is based around libraries, including GIpsyville, Western Library, Bransholme, Greenwood Avenue, Central Library and Ings Library. Cabinet member Councillor John Robinson said: "The digital economy is booming and it's important to the Liberal Democrats not to allow people in deprived areas to be left behind. Everyone needs a fair chance."
