12 Mar 2010 - Hull and Hessle Gain a Liberal Democrat MEP
Our area gained a surprise Lib Dem representative today when sitting MEP and former Tory leader in the European Parliament Edward McMillan-Scott joined the Liberal Democrats. Edward is an MEP for Yorkshire and the Humber, a Euro constituency that includes Hull and Hessle. He left the Conservatives over their alliance with far-right parties in the European Parliament, and was welcomed into the Liberal Democrats today by party leader Nick Clegg.
Nick said: “I am delighted to welcome Edward McMillan-Scott to the Liberal Democrats. For many years he has fought for human rights and democracy world wide and he is rightly a respected politician across Europe. As someone of principle he has refused to cosy up to right wing extremists, despite pressure from the Tory machine. This flies in the face of David Cameron’s claims of change. It shows that people of principle, who believe in fairness and want real change for Britain are at home in the Liberal Democrats.”
14 Feb 2010 - Continued Concerns over Hessle Post Office
Despite positive noises from the local Labour MP about a recent meeting with Post Office Ltd. about the future of Hessle' post office, Liberal Democrat councillors in Hessle will not be taking the pressure off the company to ensure the post office stays open. Commenting to the local media, Hessle councillor Brian Jefferies said: "It was a positive meeting in the sense Post Office Ltd has new premises in mind but I am concerned that, if it falls through, there isn't a second option."
Residents' experience of post office closures in nearby West Hull, and the North Hull Labour MP apparently campaigning against closures while voting for them in Parliament, are a warning to those in Hessle of what could happen. Cllr Jefferies added, "I do feel the Post Office Ltd is doing all it can, but I will feel much better once an announcement is made."
19 Oct 2009 - Hull says NO to Labour bridge tax
The Labour Government could be set to hit the people of Hull with an extra “Humber Bridge Tax”. Local Lib Dem campaigners have vowed to fight the tax hike all the way. The Government has refused to write off the debt on the bridge or to allow tolls to rise. This means the Bridge Board will go into the red next year. When the bridge was built, the Government decided that the people of Hull would have to foot 97% of the bill if the Bridge Board could not afford to keep going. Hull Lib Dem campaigner Mike Ross said: “Labour promised to build the Humber Bridge in 1966. It’s not acceptable that over 40 years later, the people of Hull could be forced to foot the bill to keep it.” Cllr Carl Minns added: “The Government should write off the debt instead of making the people of Hull foot the bill. We will take this to the top.”
08 Jun 2009 - Diana Wallis returns to Brussels Parliament
After a hard-fought campaign, Diana Wallis has been re-elected as an MEP for Yorkshire and the Humber. In a disastrous election for Labour, the Lib Dems have remained strong here in Hull as well as across the country.
