Welcome!

Hull is a medieval city with a long and proud history. It was heavily battered by the Luftwaffe in the second world war, and further damage was done by 1960s town planners. But the city remains an attractive place to live, with a friendly population and some fantastic architecture.

Having controlled Hull City Council for five years, the Liberal Democrats were returned to opposition in 2011. Our job is now to ensure that the ruling Labour group live up to its pre-election pledges. We are working hard to make sure that Labour do not drag the council back to where it was before the Lib Dems took over - the worst council in England.

Cabinet set to make a final decision on the Bridgeview School site

19 Jan 2012: On Monday Hull City Council will make a decision about where the controversial new building for Bridgeview Primary School will be placed. The two options that the Council has consulted on are the current site of Tilbury Primary school, and the current site of Bethune Park Primary school. Tilbury and Bethune Primary schools will be moving to the newly built Christopher Pickering Primary school in September.   Over the past few months Pickering ward Councillor Claire Thomas has repeatedly raised concerns about the consultation on the proposals for Bridgeview.   In a number of meetings Cllr Thomas has highlighted residents' concerns, including about increased traffic, flood risk, the loss of green space, and that the development could rule out future development of community facilities in an area that currently lacks facilities for local people.    Since the summer a public consultation has taken place but no member of the Cabinet has spoken to residents about the plans despite numerous invitations.   Councillor Claire Thomas said, “I'm still concerned about the options and the consultation process. In particular I am concerned that Cabinet members have not met with local residents, and that other site options have not been considered fully, including the existing Bridgeview site.”   She added, “Many local residents have spoken to me concerned about the ongoing disruption in the area from continued building works following on from the building of Sirius Academy and Christopher Pickering Primary. They are also concerned about the impact of traffic in the area, parking problems, flood risk, loss of local green space, and loss of local community facilities.”

Councillor raises awareness about Domestic Violence

19 Jan 2012: Hull City Councillor Claire Thomas will move a motion at a meeting of Full Council today to raise awareness about domestic violence and to ask the Council to renew its commitment to tackling the problem.   Councillor Thomas is concerned by figures compiled by Humberside Police Authority which indicate the number of repeat victims of domestic violence has increased across the region with 372 more victims compared to this time last year.   The motion, which is expected to receive cross party support, highlights the good work that the Council and Police have done to tackle the problem. In particular the motion highlights the Strength to Change project and the Domestic Abuse Partnership, and the Tilly award the partnership has been awarded.   Despite the progress made there are still worrying amounts of domestic abuse and Cllr Thomas wants to ensure the issue of domestic violence remains a top priority for the Council.   Cllr Thomas said, “When tackling domestic violence it’s really important to help victims. I know the Council and its partners do a lot of good work in supporting victims of domestic abuse. There is also an important aspect of the work to change attitudes and awareness of domestic abuse. It is important that domestic abuse is not tolerated and that victims know how to get the help they need.”   She added, “My motion calls for continued focus on the problems of domestic abuse. We need to ensure that the partnership working between the Council, police, community organisations and so on continues to bring perpetrators to justice, provide support for victims and their families, and works to change attitudes towards domestic abuse.”
