01 Feb 2010 - Victory in battle to save the 1c bus service
Local residents are delighted that the Lib Dem team has found funding to save the 1c bus. EYMS announced recently that they intended to stop running the service. Local Lib Dem teams across Hull leapt into action and Lib Dem councillors across the city worked with staff at Hull City Council to put together a rescue package - which has kept the bus service running. “We know that this is a vital local bus service used by many people and are delighted to have found a way to save it,” said Council leader Carl Minns.
19 Jan 2010 - Council Buildings for Use by the Community
Liberal Democrat portfolio holder for corportate resources, Councillor Sarita Bush, briefed the council in December on how the Lib Dems will promote the use of council buildings for community use. The Liberal Democrats in Hull have a track record of allowing local community groups to provide services from council buildings without charging them the full rent. Shortly after taking power in 2006, for example, the Lib Dems pulled the old Carnegie Library off the market to lease it to a local history group, after Labour had voted to sell it off to the highest bidder. Now the council will invite and consider more applications from community groups.
15 Jan 2010 - Working with Partners to Reduce Obesity
One of the key areas in which Hull's Liberal Democrat council has been working with partners is in tackling obesity. Liberal Democrat cabinet member Councillor Sarita Bush said: "Activity programmes at the council's leisure centres are now being accredited by NHS Hull." In her briefing to the council, she explained that residents who have completed an NHS programme can therefore continue to sustain their weight loss at the leisure centres.
10 Jan 2010 - Celebrating Success at Enterprising Britain Awards
As portfolio holder for employment and enterprise, Liberal Democrat Councillor Kalvin Neal promotes enterprise in the city. Briefing the council on a recent awards ceremony, he said: "I went with others to London for the Enterprising Britain Awards, where we represented Yorkshire and the Humber as regional winners. As most of you are probably aware, we came second in the whole country, which is a fantastic achievement, one of which we are very proud. Thank you to all concerned and let's keep up the good work."
06 Jan 2010 - Working with Local Schools to Tackle Bullying
Bullying is an issue that Hull's Liberal Democrat council is doing its best to stamp out. The council's Children and Young People's Services teamed up with the National Anti-BUllying Alliance on this year's national Anti-Bullying week, which focussed on bullying on the Internet. Councillor Christine Randall, portfolio holder for education and children's services, commented on one particular example where the city is taking a lead: "Cleeve Primary School has produced a fantastic DVD about Cyberbullying which has become a national resource for all schools across the country," she said in a briefing to the council.

A fairer deal for our troops
We the undersigned support the Liberal Democrats' call for a big pay rise for our troops fighting in war zones. We call on the Government to implement the Lib Dem proposals to raise the pay of the lowest paid troops by an extra £6,000 per year.
